A website is where your customers and potential customers go to find out about you. With everything so accessible online, there is no excuse for you not to have a website.
The first step to setting up a website is to register a domain name. We covered that in our previous post “How To Get a Domain Name”. If you haven’t got a domain name, read the step by step instructions and get one now!
Now you have a domain name, you need website hosting.
HostGator explains it very well ‘The web-hosting or server is much like the space that you rent out to have your business in.’
Without the hosting services, you won’t have a place for your files to reside, so your domain would then become like a disconnected phone number in the phone directory, and your site files would have nowhere to stay.
You need to purchase a hosting plan with a hosting provider. A hosting provider or hosting company manages the servers that host your website files.
Enough tech-talk, you need to get hosting if you want a website. We recommend using HostGator as they are an industry recognised hosting provider, has all the servers
More importantly they have a 99% uptime guarantee and provide 24/7 support via live chat email and over the phone. This post will teach you how to set up website hosting with HostGator.
Go to www.hostgator.com
Scroll down until you see the Hosting Plans page:
We recommend the Baby Plan because you get UNLIMITED domains.
That means you can host your .com.au domain, your .com domain, your personal domain, your business domain, your sisters domain, your fathers domain – ALL on one plan.
Even if you have one domain at the moment, your business may grow (that’s the plan, right?) and it makes sense to host them altogether for a few dollars more each month.
Select the yellow Sign Up Now! button.
You’ll be taken to an order form with various sections.
The first section asks you about your domain name. Since we have already registered a domain name with GoDaddy, enter your domain name and select the “I Already Own This Domain” tab.
HostGator will give you further domain name options, ignore them and go to the next section.
The next section asks you to select a hosting plan. We recommend the Baby package type and hosting your website for the same amount of time as your domain registration. For AU domain names, that is 2 years (24 months).
Having your domain and hosting on the same billing cycle will make sure you don’t forget and is the same expense every two years.
Enter a username and pin and continue to the next step, which is where you need to enter your payment details.
Section 4 asks about extra services.
Read through and make your own decision whether you want those extra services. If you are an e-commerce store (you’re selling goods or products online) we recommend selecting the SSL certificate (the last option). Ask your website developer/designer what they recommend. If Galante Group is creating your site, then de-select all other services.
Ok, so review your order, enter a coupon code if you have one and checkout.
You should receive a confirmation email giving you access to your C-Panel. Keep this and your password safe. Your website designer/developer will need this information, so forward it to them now.
I hope this has helped you learn about setting up website hosting with HostGator. If this tutorial helped you, I would appreciate a comment or share with your friends and colleagues!
