A domain name is an essential for a website. This is the ‘web address’ your customers need to access your website. A domain name consists of up to 3 parts:
www. – indicates that it’s a web address
example – the main part of the domain, usually representing a business name
.com – the domain suffix
The domain suffix is the part that indicates what type of domain it is. Examples are:
•.com – Company
•.org – Organisation (usually nonprofit)
•.edu – Educational establishment
•.net – Network provider
Countries outside of the United States also have their own domain suffixes, so we can have
•.com.au – Australian company
•.org.uk – Nonprofit UK organisation
•.eu – European site
.au Domain Administration Ltd (auDA) is the policy authority and industry self-regulatory body for the .au domain space.
.com.au suffix is to be used for commercial entities, such as companies (with ACN as registered through ASIC), and businesses (registered with state governments).
You can read more on eligibility on their website www.auda.gov.au
Domain names can be purchased from domain name registrars, such as GoDaddy. GoDaddy is an auDA accredited registrar. This means they are authorised by auDA to provide services to people who want to register a new domain name, renew their existing domain name, or make changes to their domain name record.
GoDaddy is one of the most well known domain name registrars, which I will use as an example here. GoDaddy is an auDA accredited registrar. This means they are authorised by auDA to provide services to people who want to register a new domain name, renew their existing domain name, or make changes to their domain name record.
Ok let’s get started!
Go to www.godaddy.com and search for the domain name you want. Double-check the spelling.
I’ve searched for ‘anexample.com.au’
In this case, it is available.
GoDaddy asks if you want to buy other variants such as .com or .club. Select the domain types you want. You may wish to purchase .com as well, however the others are not necessary. In this case, I only want the .com.au.
On the next screen, you will be asked if you want domain privacy. This hides your personal information from view from anyone searching for the owner of a domain. You can enable this if you choose, it costs at least $12.99 every year.
Ignore the options for hosting and email (scroll down the page) and click the orange Continue to Cart button at the bottom.
Next, you will need to register to create an account or log-in if you’re an existing customer.
On the next screen, you will be asked to IDENTIFY YOUR BUSINESS AS REQUIRED BY THE AUDA for .com.au domains.
Enter your Legal Entity name.
Choose Entity Type from the dropdown box, here are the options you can chose from on the right.
Depending on the Entity Type that you have selected, you will need to enter your Entity Identification Number. This is an ABN (Australian Business Number) or ACN (Australian Company Number) or other number according to the Entity you have selected.
Read and check the Application Agreement and select Continue to Cart.
You will now be taken to this screen where you will review your purchase:
Scroll down the page and you can enter a discount code if you have one.
Scroll back up and check that you have the correct domains. All AU domain names must be registered for 2 years.
GoDaddy will offer you more options like domain privacy (again), more domains (again), domain certification and search engine visibility. Ignore all of these add-ons and just get the domains you want.
When you are happy, proceed to the checkout and pay.
You should receive a confirmation email telling you what you’ve bought and giving you your customer number.
Keep this and your password safe. Your website designer/developer will need this information, so forward it to them now.
Next, you’ll need to set up your website hosting… Don’t worry we’ve got you covered. Get our step by step instructions on How To Set Up Web Hosting here – you can get it done in under 5 minutes!
I hope this has helped you learn about registering a domain name with GoDaddy. If this tutorial helped you, I would appreciate a comment or share with your friends and colleagues![/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]
